Marty: One less poison to worry about

05/12/09
Minnesotans love to be the best or the first in the country to do great things.  This week, we have one more “first” to celebrate and one less scary chemical to worry about poisoning our children.  Governor Pawlenty signed a new bill into law that bans the chemical BPA (a common plastic-hardening agent) from children’s drinking devices.  This chemical causes reproductive problems and possibly cancer in those exposed to it.   Disconcertingly, the chemical leaches from plastic most when it is heated up, as baby bottles almost always are.

Hopefully, the rest of the country will again follow Minnesota’s lead – like they have with renewable energy and mercury reduction.  I’m thrilled that we now have one less toxic chemical to worry about harming my children.  Even though they have graduated from baby bottles and sippy cups, they now can safely drink from nontoxic water bottles.
